Are Oats Gluten Free?

Updated: Aug 14, 2023

This question causes a lot of confusion.

Gluten is the name given to a protein in wheat (gliadin), rye (secalin), barley (hordein) & oats (avenin).

So even if oats are described as gluten free/friendly they may be free from gliadin but not from avenin.

Some people with coeliac disease or who are gluten intolerant can tolerate oats, others may not.

If you are doing a gluten free eliminatory trial, I suggest you remove oats to get a true indicator of how your body is responding to all forms of gluten.

If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, you may benefit from removing gluten for an initial period of 4 weeks:

  • Autoimmune conditions.

  • Incomplete and unformed bowel movements.

  • Less than 1 bowel movement a day.

  • Bloating after meals or at the end of the day.

  • If you have a strong Irish Heritage.

Great gluten free substitutes are rice, millet, buckwheat, quinoa, amaranth, arrowroot & besan.
